Mr. Kervin Stiell

85-year-old Mr. Kervin Stiell brings his many decades of participation and observation of Shakespeare Mas to this interview.  Born and raised on the island of Carriacou, his roots and interests are deeply entwined in the history and culture of his native island.  He has also traveled widely, serving in the West India Regiment of the British Army and in the British Army in the 1950's and 1960's.

These performance videos are of Carriacou resident Kervin Stiell, taken in his garden next to the ocean which you can hear in the background.  He is reciting some speeches from Shakespeare Mas which he first started preparing as a teen-ager.  Now aged 85, he engages with other Shakespeare Mas players from time to time, still reciting the speeches, but without the elaborate costume and without taking part in the combat.

The tunic he is wearing was given to him by Stephen Alexander, Director of the Carriacou Historical Society for many years who passed away recently.  Although the tunic is simpler, it is in the spirit of the more elaborate Mas costumes.  In our conversations on March 6, 2025 when these performances videos were shot, Kervin Stiell credited Mr. Alexander with the revival of Shakespeare Mas and spoke with great affection and gratitude for the tunic he received from Mr. Alexander.
